Hernias are one of the more common operations performed by general surgeons. Hernias commonly develop in the groin, the umbilicus, and in previous incisions. They can develop in other areas also.

A hernia is easily described as a defect in the abdominal wall. The defect is usually in the connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds the muscles. In some areas, the layers are separated, so the hernia has to come through 2 different layers to become a problem.

Hernias are fixed in numerous ways. They can be sewn (primary repair), or mesh can be utilized to strengthen the repair. If mesh is used, the chance of the hernia recurring, or coming back, is significantly reduced. In some patients, use of mesh is not wise, and will not or cannot be used.

Hernias can be repaired Laparoscopically as well as via the traditional open techniques. Laparoscopically, there is usually a quicker return to work, with less restrictions (2 weeks). With the open technique, there is usually more restrictions on activity for a longer period of time (up to 2 months). They type of surgery will be discussed with you by your surgeon, and then you, as a team can decide which type of repair is best for you, as a patient.
